Does Online Blackjack Really Have the Best House Edge?

blackjack guide complete canada image1

You may have heard that online blackjack is one of the lowest-edge games around. Some even claim that it is the only beatable casino game. How true this is and what it means greatly depends on player skills, strategy and the principle of “house edge.”

The House Edge of Blackjack Explained

So, what do we mean by "house edge?" This indicator, also referred to as "house advantage", represents the statistical percentage that a casino would keep from a player's bet

For example, if you take $100 to a blackjack table with a 1% house edge, and you bet $10 per hand, the casino can expect to keep around $0.10 per hand, and over time, you may lose $10 out of your initial $100.

Now, the typical house edge for many of the best online slots in Canada is around 10% to 5% and in blackjack, this can be as low as 0.5% or even less. This is partly due to the fact that slots are purely based on luck and offer less player control or strategic decision-making than blackjack.

So, yes, it’s true that blackjack has one of the lowest edges around, but taking full advantage of this greatly depends on strategy and skills. At the end of this article, we’ll share some useful insights into basic blackjack strategies that can help you with this.

Online Blackjack Games with the Best Odds

When you want to get the most out of playing online blackjack in Canada, the best way to start is selecting games with the highest Return To Player (RTP).

The RTP is the statistical percentage of wagered money that will be returned to players over time. Although it is calculated differently, the RTP can be described as a reverse house edge.

Below, we’ve listed the games that’ll give you the best odds and the blackjack casinos that offer these.

Blackjack Online Canada - Live vs Digital

Blackjack is a staple in pretty much every operator's games library and players can choose between computer-generated versions of the game, such as blackjack video “slots,”  and live dealer blackjack.

Below we'll explore the differences between and advantages of each of these different ways of playing blackjack online.

Digital Blackjack

When playing digital blackjack, video blackjack or RNG blackjack, you play against a computer instead of a real live dealer. A Random Number Generator (RNG) “shuffles” the cards between each hand, creating random results.

There is a wide variety of digital blackjack games available, including exciting variations on the traditional format. You can play these at any online blackjack casino in Canada and as it’s just you playing against a computer, “seats” are always available.

For the same reason, you can play completely at your own pace. You decide when to move on to the next round by clicking the button, leaving you with plenty of time to think about your next move.

At the same time, because you don't have to wait for other players to act, the game can be played much quicker.

One of the downsides to digital blackjack is that playing with a strategy will be less useful. Because of the use of an RNG, which shuffles cards between each hand, there is less room for strategic planning

Live Blackjack

Live dealer blackjack offers a more authentic experience in comparison to its digital counterpart. The main reason for this is that you're playing against a real live dealer and with other players.

This means that, as you connect to a live stream broadcasted from a TV studio, you play the game with other people and watch the cards being dealt in real-time by a human dealer.

Via a chat function you can chat with the dealer and other players. The cards are physically shuffled and drawn from the shoe right before your eyes.

One of the main advantages of playing live casino games and live dealer blackjack is that the interaction with other players and the use of real decks of cards, allow for making strategic decisions.

Gameplay can be configured to add new and exciting elements. You can often benefit from variations in the number of decks, the rules for dealer play, doubling, splitting, surrendering, and side bet options.

If you’re used to the speed of digital blackjack, with live blackjack you have to take things a bit easier. You have to wait for other players to make their playing decisions before it’s your turn to act.

However, if speed is crucial to you, you can try Evolution’s Live Speed Blackjack. This live blackjack game utilizes a unique game mechanic, increasing the number of hands played per hour, resulting in a faster-paced gameplay.

The biggest disadvantage of live blackjack may be the fact that seats aren’t always available. Contrary to digital blackjack where you can start playing at any time that suits you.

The Best Blackjack Bonuses

Casino bonuses can be a great way to explore a new casino or game with extra bonus money and have a fair chance at winning too. However, finding a great online blackjack bonus can be a little tricky.

Most bonuses must be wagered before they can be turned into cash, meaning that the bonus amount must be played through a set number of times. And not all game types contribute equally towards fulfilling these wagering requirements.

Slots usually contribute 100%, but table games or live dealer games may contribute less, often only 10%, or not at all. This includes blackjack.

One of the reasons is the fairly low house edge of such games. Allowing blackjack games to contribute fully towards the playthrough requirements simply isn’t advantageous enough for most online casinos. The bottom line? The best casino bonuses in Canada may not be the best bonuses for blackjack.

However, there are other ways to take advantage of promotions when playing blackjack online in Canada. Let’s have a look at some of these:

  1. tournament-icon
    Blackjack Tournaments

Players can participate in blackjack tournaments with the chance of winning part of a prize pool. To participate, players must quality. For instance, they must be among the first 500 qualifying minimum bets. During the tournament, players will collect points for qualifying wins and prices will usually be payed out in cash without any wagering requirements.

  2. bonus-cashback-icon
    Blackjack Cashback Bonus

With this bonus you get a percentage of your net losses back. Usually, this applies to selected games only and there will be a maximum cashback amount. There can be other conditions such as that players must place a minimum bet for a minimum number of rounds.

  3. vip-icon
    VIP Programs

Players can accumulate points by playing blackjack and exchange them for various rewards such as exclusive offers and bonuses.

Many customized blackjack or live casino promotions are limited time offers, so it’s worth checking the operator's promotions page frequently.

Can I Play Online Blackjack Games For Free?

If you want to play free online blackjack games in Canada, you can try playing in demo mode

Many casinos offer this option, also known as fun mode, for most of their jackpot games and it is a great way to get acquainted with the game before wagering real money.

Gameplay is usually the same as the real money version of the game, the only difference is that you bet with virtual money.

With all the features of the game available to you, you can practice strategies without actually risking any funds. This makes free online jackpot games an ideal platform for novice gamblers or those who just want to enjoy a few rounds of jackpot without spending too much money.

Note that fun mode is not available for live dealer blackjack games. Fortunately, most operators with a live casino lobby allow registered players to watch a live dealer game as it evolves, simply by clicking on a game in progress.

Types of Online Blackjack Games

Today's online blackjack is still pretty much played in the same way as the original game was played 400 years ago. However, there are much more variations available.

Let's have a look at the most played types of online blackjack.

  • blackjack rules

    Classic Blackjack

The most common version of the game is classic blackjack. It’s the easiest to learn variation. When playing blackjack online with an optimal strategy, you can benefit from a house edge as low as 0.5%.

The game, also known as American blackjack, is played with eight 52-card decks. They are shuffled together before every hand is dealt.

There are no side bets and dealers must hit on totals of 16 or under as well as on soft 17 (a hand containing an ace that totals either 7 or 17). If you hit blackjack, your payout will be 3:2.

  • 02 european blackjack

    European Blackjack

European blackjack is very similar to classic blackjack, making it easy for players to grasp the rules.

Traditionally, this version is played with only two decks. One of the reasons why it’s very popular. Playing with fewer decks makes it easier to “count cards” and predict outcomes based on probability. However, when playing blackjack online in Canada you’ll probably play the game with the standard 8 deck setup.

Also, with most RNG-generated blackjack games,  cards will be re-shuffled between each round, making card counting less useful. The most prominent and unique feature of European blackjack is that the dealer will only receive his second card once all players have played their hands.

  • 03 blackjack switch

    Blackjack Switch

Blackjack Switch allows you to bet on two hands. And after being dealt the cards, you can choose to switch some of them from one of your hands to the other. You can also double your bet before and after splitting a hand.

At blackjack switch, a winning hand is paid 1:1 instead of the standard 3:2.

  • 05 progressive blackjack

    Progressive Blackjack

Progressive blackjack is basically standard blackjack, but with a side bet option for a progressive jackpot. How to trigger that jackpot payout? You place a side bet and hope for a winning hand. Usually, this is a hand of three or four aces, but other winning combinations are possible, depending on the game. The outcome of this side bet doesn’t affect the results of the base game.

  • 06 spanish 21

    Spanish 21

With this variant, all "10" cards are excluded from the deck, providing more opportunities for wins. If the hand of the player totals 21, they will win the game regardless of the score of the dealer. Additionally, there are bonuses for particular hands. An example is the “7-7-7 suited,” where you’ll receive a payout of 2:1.

  • 04 multihand blackjack

    Multi-hand Blackjack

If you’re looking for a little more action, the multi-hand blackjack might be for you. Instead of one hand, you can play five or even six hands at the same time.

The core rules are the same as standard blackjack, so players looking for some typical blackjack excitement can step right in.

The digital blackjack format is perfectly suited for this variant, as it allows you to take the time you need to carefully consider your moves.

How to Play Blackjack Online

blackjack guide image2

Blackjack is a card game usually played with 6 or 8 decks of 52 cards with different values. The goal is to obtain a winning hand against the dealer or bank. You achieve this by getting closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21 (“bust”).

At the start of the game, players will be dealt 2 cards, face-up. The dealer also gets 2 cards but one is face down (hole card). Players begin the game before the dealer and based on the cards that are dealt, they can decide to either “hit” (take more cards) or “stand.” Players can carry on hitting until they are closest to 21 without going over.

Upon serving all the players, the dealer will reveal the hole card. Dealers must continue to hit until they have a total of 17 or more. Then, they must stand. If and when a player and the dealer both have blackjack or the same card total, this is considered a “draw” and no one wins or loses.

There are several other things a player can do during a game. Below, we briefly describe the 3 most common options:

  1. Splitting Pairs

Players can double their bet by splitting their cards into 2 separate hands and playing them when their turn comes around. In European blackjack, this can only be done once in the game and with like-valued cards of 10 value: 10’s, Jacks, Queens and Kings.

In American blackjack, players can split any pair of cards with the same value up to three times. Players can also solely use one card to split Aces, which can only be split once.

Be aware that when splitting pairs, you must also place an additional wager. This is equal to your original one.

  2. Doubling Down

When you think your hand will beat the dealer, you can double your initial bet. In European blackjack, you can only do this when the original 2 cards that were dealt equal 9, 10 or 11. In the American variant, players can double down on any total.

  3. Taking Insurance

Insurence is a side bet, specifically offered when the dealer’s face-up card is an ace. You can use this side bet to insure yourself against the possibility that the dealer has blackjack.

An insurance bet pays out at 2:1, which means that you can potentially break even on your hand when the dealer has blackjack.

alert-icon

We don't recommend placing an insurance bet. It relies on the unlikely scenario of the dealer having a blackjack, making it a statistically poor bet in the long run.

Blackjack Online Card Values

In Blackjack, it’s all about the value of the cards that you have been dealt. When the total value of two cards comes closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand, you have a winning hand. Let’s take a closer look at the values of all the cards in a deck.

  • Cards 2-10 – These cards represent their numerical value. So, a card with a 2 is worth 2 points.
  • Jack, Queen, King – These cards are all worth 10 points.
  • Ace – The ace card can be worth 1 or 11 points, whichever is best for your hand. So an ace plus a 2 can be either a 3 or 13. When your first two cards are a 10 plus an ace, you have blackjack.

Online Blackjack Strategies

blackjack strategy image

To take full advantage of blackjack's low house edge or to bring it even further down, players can apply certain tactics. These tactics are based on probability. We’ll explain this in more detail below.

Rules of Probability

Most gambling strategies are based on the rules of probability. This is also true for online blackjack. The most common blackjack strategy evolves around the fact that there are only 16 cards that are worth 10 in a 52-card deck. This allows you to apply a strategy based on the assumption that the next card being dealt is a 10.

For instance, before playing your hand, you will have to look at the dealer’s upcard, assuming that the downcard is a 10. This may give you a good guess at their total, so you can play your hand accordingly.

If the dealer has a strong hand (their upcard is a 10, 9 or 8), you can assume their total is 20, 19 or 18. Now you can take new cards more often to get a higher total score.

If the dealer’s hand is weak and their upcard is a low number like 3, 4, 5 or 6, you may assume that their total is 13, 14, 15 or 16. This means that the dealer will have to take a new card, likely to be a 10 or another high-value card (based on probability), which will cause them to bust. Knowing this, you can safely stand on your two cards on any total over 11.

Is the dealer weak? Double down

When doubling down you can double your chances of winning, but also of losing. If the dealer’s hand looks weak, you can double down on more hands with less risk. Typically, you would double down on 11, assuming that the next card will be 10, this will give you 21. Blackjack!

Forget About Side Bets

Side bets are great to add some excitement to the blackjack gameplay, but they are not necessarily best suited for increasing your chances of winning. They also have a higher house edge.

Don’t Split Tens

Splitting pairs can be interesting, particularly if the dealer’s hand looks weak. However, if you already have a 10, you are likely to have a winning hand already. You don’t want to lose that opportunity by splitting your cards.
